SUPERSTICIOSA

SPRING 2023

INSTALLATION

This four month project aims to highlight the relationship between women in Cuba and superstition as it relates to the presence of out-dated beliefs stemming from cultural traditions and religion. Supersticiosa deals in inherited beliefs, rituals, and practices; their origins and purpose.

Supersticiosa consists of a 2-channel installation, a process book and knitted pieces. For the installation, the photographs/slideshow were projected onto fabric while the audio and captions were displayed on a nearby CRT monitor. The process book was a way to keep track of what I had made and read for the semester, along with my reflections on my own relationship with the subject. The knitted pieces served as physical manifestations of an inherited practice and were intended to be used as a means to censor parts of the process book or CRT monitor.

“The girl prefers wonderment to adventure; she spreads a vague magic light on things and people. The idea of magic is that of a passive force; because she is doomed to passivity and yet wants power, the adolescent girl must believe in magic: her body’s magic that will bring men under her yoke, the magic of destiny in general that will fulfill her without her having to do anything.”

The Second Sex, Simone De Beauvoir (1949)
